Gay History Walk on Sunday!

Join the Calgary Gay History Project’s Matthew Gillespie on a walk through the Beltline from 10:30 AM – Noon. We will travel to significant historical gathering spots for the gay community in this inner city neighbourhood, including Calgary’s first gay bar, from 1968, Club Carousel.

Meet: CommunityWise (The Former Old Y) 223 12 Avenue SW

Originally from Montreal, Matt first got a glimpse of Calgary during a summer vacation in 1977 and returned in 1980 to work the summer laying carpet in Esso Plaza downtown. After university, he made the decision to go west for good in 1988. Matt has been active in the community thru Apollo Friends in Sports, Rocky Mountain Singers, Pride Calgary, GLCSA, One Voice Chorus and the Calgary Men’s Chorus.

The Calgary Gay History Project has been involved with Jane’s Walk since 2013 and the May walks have seen a great variety of weather conditions, including snow! Intrepid walkers came out regardless. Here is a photo montage of past walks.

Upcoming Events and Holiday Hiatus

The Calgary Gay History Project is going to be subdued over the next four weeks. However, you can look forward to these Spring programming events.

Sunday, April 23rd 7 PM @ The Globe Cinema

We are partnering with the Calgary Underground Film Festival to present the WORLD PREMIERE of THE UNTOLD TALES OF ARMISTEAD MAUPIN. The film is about the celebrated author whose Tales of the City books were groundbreaking works of gay fiction. This series of nine books published between 1978 and 2014 mirrored developments in the gay rights movement across North America.

10th Anniversary Jane’s Walk

Sunday, May 14th, 1:00 PM @ Knox United Church, 506 4 St SW

To celebrate Knox’s 10 year anniversary of being an affirming congregation in the United Church of Canada, the church is hosting a number events including a presentation on the history of the LGBTQ community and organized spirituality in Calgary. More details to come.

Gay History @ Congress

Congress, a huge academic conference, is coming to the University of Calgary from May 28th – June 3rd. There will be approximately 8000 delegates representing 70 scholarly associations in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

The Calgary Gay History Project is participating in a couple of ways.

Calgary professor Dr. Nancy Janovicek and the Canadian Historical Association have invited us to run campus gay history walks during Congress. We have developed a 50-minute tour which will takes delegates, and members of the public to key sites of queer culture and politics on campus. We will explore how students organized to challenge homophobia and fought to make the university a place of tolerance. This tour is co-sponsored by the Faculty of Arts, Department of History, and the Q Centre.

The walks will take place, Monday, May 30th, Tuesday, May 31st, and Wednesday, June 1st at noon leaving from the Q Centre at MacEwan Hall Room 210 on the U of C campus.

We are also in the program for the Sexuality Studies Association on May 31st. Working with Third Street Theatre and playwright Natalie Meisner, we will be presenting a play reading and panel discussion about: 69: Legislating Love & The Everett Klippert Story. Klippert’s famous 1967 court case has been in the news recently, as the Prime Minister considers a posthumous pardon for the man whose court case led to the decriminalization of homosexuality in Canada. The panel will feature Natalie Meisner, Jonathan Brower, Tereasa Maillie and Kevin Allen representing both the artistic and research driven aspects of the project.

There are two film screenings at Congress exploring international aspects of the LGBTQ struggle for human rights. Nancy Nicol, a documentary filmmaker and scholar, is presenting two films: And Still We Rise (2015, 70 min.) co-directed with Richard Lusimbo, and No Easy Walk To Freedom (2014, 91 min.) created with the Naz Foundation India Trust in Delhi.
