New Gala, Next Walk & Queer Archive Donation

Calgary queer history readers and/or party aficionados might be interested in Third Street Theatre’s inaugural “Stars of the Stage & Screen” gala & costume party on Friday, June 27th at the Arrata Opera Centre at 8pm.

All money raised goes to the next production season of Third Street Theatre – Calgary’s only queer theatre company that challenges stereotypes and gives a voice to a marginalized LGBTQ community. Tickets and info: here.

We will be reprising our Beltline Gay History Walk on Saturday, July 26th from 7:00-8:30 PM as part of Historic Calgary Week. Come out to learn about meaningful spots in our communities history including the location of Calgary’s first gay bar, Club Carousel. The walk will start and finish at CommunityWise (the Old Y) at 223 12 Ave. SW. Usually we head to a Beltline Pub afterwards for more conviviality. Everyone is welcome!

Finally, I had lunch this week with an old colleague and friend of mine, Shelagh Anderson, the former publisher of QC Magazine, who now lives in Nova Scotia with her wife and daughter. She donated a complete collection of the Calgary based queer periodical which ran for about 3 years beginning in 1995 for the archives we are building. As a bonus: many of the covers are signed by the subjects of the cover story. Thank you Shelagh!

Next Gay History Walk & Other News

We are excited to be participating again this year with Jane’s Walk, an event coordinated by the Calgary Foundation. There are over 40 community walks to take in. Our Downtown Gay History Walk (new) will take place Saturday, May 3rd at 10 AM. Our meeting point will be at the front steps of CommunityWise (the Old Y) at 223 12 Ave. SW. Everyone is welcome.

To be perfectly honest the full walk has not been scripted yet. If you have a good downtown gay history story, contact us in the next week or so, and we will try to incorporate it.

It has been a sad time in Calgary with the murder of five young University of Calgary students. Of particular note, is the passing of Lawrence Hong, who was an active and visible volunteer in the queer community.

The Calgary Herald’s Val Fortney and Xtra.ca’s Douglas Boyce have both written lovely memorial articles. Calgary Transit’s touching gesture of creating bus route 430 in honour of Lawrence was quite moving, with funds raised to support our very own Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival.

One can often find solace in the arts, and I wanted to note Third Street Theatre’s original theatrical production, The Passion of Sergius and Bacchus has opened this week.

Created by the lauded Queer Theatre Creation Ensemble, this three-person historical drama is on original work based on the controversial true story of two Roman soldiers married by the Christian church in 300 AD and martyred for their faith by the Roman Empire. The production runs April 22^rd – May 3^rd, 2014 at EPCOR CENTRE’s Motel.

Check your basements – we want your stuff!

We needed a quiet month after the excitement of the Club Carousel Cabaret. The amount of press we had was amazing and the sold out performance was more amazing still. Check out the Calgary Herald review by Stephen Hunt.

The Calgary Gay History Project owes a big thanks to the artistic vision of Third Street Theatre: Paul Welch and Jonathan Brower for the creation of the cabaret. Their next production opens this month: Late, A Cowboy Song runs from March 11 – 22nd, 2014: you should check it out. Congratulations also to Paul for getting the Enbridge Emerging Artist Award at the recent Mayor’s Lunch for Arts Champions.

Look for new weekly gay history posts this month on Thursdays. Now, however, we are calling you to search for old files, photos, meeting minutes, T-shirts, badges, pins, flags, queer publications, or other memorabilia that you could donate to a newly forming gay archives. We (Kevin Allen and Carolyn Anderson) met with the Glenbow Archives last month, and walking through their vaults, saw that our community’s history is missing.

The Calgary Gay History Project is currently gathering archival materials. If donated to the future archives they will be cared for in perpetuity and made accessible to future researchers. You might even be eligible for a tax receipt! Contact Kevin for more information.
