Beautiful night for a walk and a kick, start…

We had over 100 participants on the Pride Week Calgary Gay History Walk last night – see photos below.  People learned about downtown sites of significance to the LGBTQ community and we had a live tweeting conversation between Mayor Nenshi and gay history walkers about the lack of a Pride Flag flying at City Hall (one of our stops).

Walkers also picked up hot-off-the-press Kickstarter postcards for the Writing Calgary’s Gay History Campaign (pledge, pledge, pledge, please).

Thanks go to the anonymous donor who slipped me cash on the walk as well as to Polish Queer Historian, Bart, who gave me his book QueerWarsaw – what a treat!  Finally, there was a lovely reception hosted by Calgary Outlink at the back patio of CommunityWise Resource Centre.

Come see us at the Calgary Gay History Festival Booth this Sunday at the Pride Festival from Noon – 6:00 PM.

Writing Calgary’s Gay History – the Book

August 25th – The Calgary Gay History Project launches the Kickstarter campaign to fund a book chronicling our community’s story.  In the past two years we have presented our findings of Calgary’s gay history in the 50s and 60s multiple times as well as led a number of popular gay history walks through Calgary’s Beltline and Downtown areas – now it’s time to write the book!

Over the next three weeks, you can contribute to our story, by investing directly in this book’s creation.  Check out our assorted Kickstarter rewards, including pre-ordering the book, or having a private gay history walking tour.

Please share the Kickstarter link to your networks!

Gay History is Popular!

As Calgary gears up for Pride, local media has been lining up at the Gay History Project’s door this week to get the skinny on Calgary’s past relations with the gay community!  Phew, I am getting interviewed out…

Next week keep your eyes out for  a website refresh, as well as the launch of our Kickstarter campaign in support of the Calgary Gay History Book!

And if that was not enough, we now have a facebook page and twitter account – which go live now.  If you want to potentially win a  newly printed Calgary Gay History T-shirt, we will randomly give one to a new facebook follower and one to a new twitter follower (sign up by September 1st).

Finally, don’t forget the new Downtown Gay History Walk we are doing in partnership with Calgary Outlink, on August 27th at 7 PM.  The post-walk reception hosted by Outlink will be in the lovely back patio of CommunityWise 223, 12 Ave. SW.
