Our community’s debt to Stephen Lock

This week I have been going through all sorts of print materials to get grounded in the history of our community, and many things lead back to Stephen, who I have had a few conversations with about queer history in Calgary. [Obviously we need to talk again]…

Here is a reference to the beginning of his historical musings in Gay Calgary and Edmonton Magazine.

Also, the issue of FFWD, where he was celebrated as Calgary’s most active activist, and planted on that issue’s cover.

Finally, thanks to James Wilt and FFWD this week for noting my project in their newspaper.

This is SO Calgary…

In residency this week (Sep 4-7)

I am at Calgary Outlink beginning my research on queer Calgary from the 50s and 60s.  Pride this past weekend was excellent.  Thanks to everyone who stopped by to talk about Calgary history and/or stopped to get a postcard.

If you or someone you know would like to participate in this project please call me at 403-890-7278.  I am keen to record recollections and stories from the community but if you would rather just have an anonymous conversation, that’s OK too.

There is so much to learn and I am realizing that I have just scratched the surface of our community’s history.

Looking forward to chatting,

Kevin
